Even by the middle of the 20th century, following
the beginning of information explosion search was
on for automated systems capable of indexing
large volumes of information. H.P. Luhn’s Keyword
Indexing could be seen as an effort in this direction.
The simplicity of its approach and its ability to
handle and process very large volumes of textual
information made the system acceptable in a wide
range of information environments, particularly large
bibliographic databases, indexing and abstracting
services. Several different sub-species of keyword
indexing came to be developed and today keyword
indexes are widely accepted despite their limitations
in effective information retrieval. The advent of World
