Season 1 of No Game No Life (Nogemu Noraifu), consisting of 12 episodes, was released in April 2014 and suddenly became very popular with the audiences, including those outside Japan. The series was also broadcast in France, the United States (Crunchyroll) and Spain. Such popularity can be explained by a rather interesting and adventurous storyline, unusually bright graphics, eccentricity and humor. The series can be even considered an intellectual thriller – that is how good it is.
Sora and Shiiro, 18 and 11 years old respectively, are step-siblings, hermits and sociopaths, who cannot live without each other, because on their own they simply can’t establish any social connections with other people. They become part of a virtual world. These two game addicts together defeat all other players – no one can win against these two. So it is not surprising that, having learned about a virtual world where all conflicts are resolved exclusively by means of games – Disboard – the couple immediately finds itself right in the middle of it. They were summoned into this world by Tet, a god from another reality, so they could entertain him by eventually fighting against him for the throne of this world, and meanwhile by playing to get to the throne of the human race. In the course of the game, the brother and sister find allies by winning over their loyalty and other qualities during games.
The graphics of No Game No Life is unusually colorful, even too colorful. But these acid colors seem appropriate in the virtual world, where 16 races live and compete against each other in games. What we find particularly pleasing are constant references to other anime series that parody famous scenes and episodes from those series. Additionally, No Game No Life somehow manages to utilize almost all anime genres, so every viewer will definitely find something to enjoy about it.
Unfortunately, there have been no renewal announcements yet from the producers. We really hope that there will be a second season because the original ranobe is still being published. Maybe we’ll see new episodes in spring 2016.
