China's research on IGCC started in 1970s, and its first IGCC demonstration power plant was constructed in October 1997. In 2006, the IGCC was selected as one of the key technologies for future power generation, according to the National Program for Medium-to-Long-Term Scientific and Technological Development (2006–2010) that were issued by the State Council of China. China aimed to develop its domestic IGCC power plants by importing and grasping overseas technologies. The Huaneng Group launched its Green Gen project in May 2013, and put the first near-zero-carbon-emission IGCC power plant into commercial operation. The evolution of coal-fired generation technologies in China is shown in Fig. 1.
