Advice from real au pairs:
Get to know people
"Don't stay inside- get out into your community and get to know people, talk to your host family about how you are feeling. It is ok to be home sick, but try and get out and not to think about it too much. I know for me I had to tell some of my friends not to call as often because I was spending so much time waiting for their phone calls that I wasn't getting out and seeing different things."
Enjoy this adventure!
"Don't stress when and if you get homesick! Just relax and think of the positive things you will be able to experience in your year. Home will always be home but you only get one chance to enjoy this adventure!"
After 6-8 weeks in the U.S. everything is getting easier
"I am sure that the hardest thing is to be away from home, friends and family, but she should not be too worried about that, because it is just one year in her whole life and after 6-8 weeks in the U.S. everything is getting easier, and the rest of the year will be a great experience.
