My experience at Central Casting has been very good. Obviously it differs for different people, but for myself, I've had great luck working 3-4 days a week. There would be times where they would call me before I even had a chance to find out what jobs were available, and luckily these were SAG jobs, even though I am Non-Union.
Thanks to their help, I have enough vouchers to join the union, but unfortunately I don't have the money to pay the union fee. Also, because I have worked so many union jobs, I am now unable to work SAG jobs without joining the union, or I will be penalized with them holding my check until I do.
The best tip I can give you is to "know your look" and not your personality or preference. What I mean by that is that even if you are a the sweetest person out there, but you look like an angry hateful person, embrace the look and do your best to enhance the "evil" characteristics of your look. If you look like a bimbo, enhance that look. If you look like a gang member, drug addict, etc. don't try to come off with a look that says "I'm a corporate professional", because you will just be sabotaging your success.
That was the issue I ran into the first time I worked with them and would only find jobs about once every few months. When I tried them again, I embraced my "Bad Boy" look and found myself working most days of the week. I was usually cast as a prisoner/inmate, mechanic, gangbanger/thug, mob henchman, fighter/trainer/corner man, bouncer, etc. (hardly ever a "good guy") and while they weren't my ideal role (since I wanted to break the stereotypes and be who I was) you have to remember that the part that you play isn't who you are. It's just acting and you will do your job by embracing your look.
When you do this, you show your mettle as an actor/employee and you become dependable to the Casting Directors. They will remember you as a person who knows what roles they fit and will have faith in you when you call, since you don't call wasting their time for parts in which you don't fit the description beings asked for, sometimes causing them to "toss you a bone" when allowed, by casting you even if they have filled the parts that you fit and just cutting out the fat somewhere else, mainly in "cattle call" scenes.
You will also become well known to the Casting Directors, which in turn helps you, since your face may pop up when they have a specific look in mind.
Finally, don't quit your day job if you have one. You may not experience the success you are looking for and could find yourself working less than you expected. This kind of job is best for people who have flexible hours, student's, and the unemployed who need even a little something to hold them over.
Tip: A lot of the sets are on a budget and as an extra you are at the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to nourishment. Make sure to have a few bucks at hand and/or snack packs/kits that don't require refrigeration. They will definitely come in handy. You may also want to take a bottle of water/tea/soda, since these may not be available to you as an extra.
Most of all, good luck and I wish any and all who seek this path nothing but luck in their future.
