One of the most important schools of buddhism within the mahayana family is Chan or Zen Buddhism. Traditon has it that Chan was founded by the Indian monk Bodhidharma, who wnet to China from India in late 5th century CE, staying briefly in the southern part of the country before moving to North China where he taught for over thirty years.
