Summary This short story tells the story of a young man's evening in New York, in 1963, where he is walking the streets and to everyone around him, he looks like he is in love, with a smile on his lips and a bouncy walk, so people assume he is on his way to a girl. He comes by numerous people and by the description of these people we get a feeling that we're on the dark side of New York; there is an old bum, teenagers, men with beer bellies, people watching TV outside a hardware store and a couple of pregnant women who hangs out, smoking, in front of a washateria. Our main character comes by an elderly man who sells flowers from a handcart, and on the radio this man has, it is said that there is a hammer murderer on the loose. The two of them has a dialogue about what kind of flowers the young man should buy. The young man buys some flowers and walks on. He turns down an alley, and waits for the girl. The girl comes up, but she does not recognize our main character. He kills her with a hammer he had in his inner-pocket and walks away, looking like he is in love, with that smile on his lips, and that bouncy walk. Compostion First of all, we, as readers, never get the real name of the main character clearly a cliff-hanger all trough the story. In the beginning we are told that he looks like he is in love, and the scenery around the main character is described in details*, so we assume from the beginning that we are going to get a description of who he is in love with, and that the story is a love-story, when it in the end reveals itself as a horror-story. When our main character reaches inside his pocket and changes the expression of his face, we are told that he touches a something again**. We hang on to this piece of information because it is "the unknown" the thing we need to know about, but we cannot, not unless we keep reading. It is actually first in the very last part of the story that we get the full picture of what this young man is up to, why he looks like he is in love, and what it is that he touches inside his pocket, and it is only here we get described what our main character is thinking and feeling the other parts of the story only describes him on the
