According to TRACC45, it has been suggested that a minimum of 5 percent of mangroves (30,000 ha) in Malaysia should be conserved as National Parks or other forms of protected areas. Progress towards this aim has been made, especially in Sarawak where approximately 2,500 hectares of mangroves are formally protected within various national parks and another 10,000 hectares are in the process of being gazetted.
