One day the Buddha went to Uruvela to preach the Dhamma, and asked permission from the eldest of three hermit brothers,Uruvelakassapa,to stay there. Uruvelakassapa had 500 followers (rishis),and was greatly respected by the people of the Magadha region(now known as Bihar).Uruvelakassapa was not convinced of the Buddha's powers, and the Buddha performed various miracles to change his attitude. One of these was when the Buddha tamed Phaya Naga that was highly respected by the rishis.Shirtly afterwards the rishis came upon the Buddha practicing walking meditation,as if nothing had happened. At another time,a flood arose, and the rishis went in boats to see the Buddha walking in the flood waters, with both hands raised to stop the well of water. The rishis were finally convinced of the power of the Buddha, and asked permission to be ordained.
