This paper introduces an improved SCR SSGD,
designed for a MV Solid State starter (MV SSS) and
MV drive input rectifier for a large induction motor.
The proposed system derives power for gating the
SCR from energy stored in the snubber capacitors at
tum on and the voltage across the SCR at turn off.
This paper includes the analysis and design of the
proposed SSGD, verified experimentally on a 4160V ,
400A MVSSS
