Her Majesty Queen Sirikit is probably best known as a hard-working woman who devote most of her time to projects that benefit her people. Did you know,however,she also has a sweet mode-in the kitchen?
Many of you might be wondering what kind of meals the Royal Family enjoy, or whether they can cook, since there are certainly many servants to do this duty. For Queen Sirikit however, not only is she is also the loving mother of four children, so when the Prince and Princesses were young, HM the Queen always took care to make sure they ate well and received all the nutrition her growing children needed.
HM the Queen created new dishes to sitmulate the appetite of her children and vary their diet. For example,Phad Lao Pi’ (Liu Pei from the’ Three Kingdom’ novel) is fried pork liver and kidney served on lettuce and topped with crispy fried thin rice noodles. This meal is full of iron and vitamin A which is important for the blood and good vision.
Another creative dish from the Queen’s kitchen is an egg menu that is great for growing children. Khai Phra Chan of Moon Egg is a fried egg covered with cooked rice before turning them over together. When is a moon in the middle of the rice and this is a fun favourite dinner for kids.
When HM Queen Sirikit travels upcountry, she enjoys the native foods of each area such as ‘Khao Soy’ when going to the North, Khao Yam when going the South,and Larb when going to the Northeast. But the daily must-have menu is Nam Prik like Nam Prik Kapi with fried Thai mackerel,
Nam Pril Pla ra and Nam Prill Num, among others. All are served with fresh, boiled, and fried vegetable. Besides the vegetable side dishes, HM the Queen also loves vegetables in the main dishes like salad ‘Kaeng Som’ (sour soup)
‘Kaeng Leang’ (spicy vegetable and prawn soup, and ‘Kaeng Khae’ (mixed vegetable soup with northern spices )
Queen Sirikit also loves brown rice. She always suggests that Thai people should eat more of this unpolished rice because of its health benefits. Whenever she entertains at the royal residence, she likes to have both white and brown rice on the dining table so her guests can have a choice
