Co-product handling approach. To handle the multi-output
activities in CLCA, co-product allocation is avoided by system
expansion. First of all, it is important to determine whether the
product of interest of the multi-output activities is the determining
or dependent co-product. The increased demand for a determining
product will increase its production whereas the change in demand
for a dependent co-product will not affect its production. For
example, molasses is a dependent co-product of sugarcane production. The production of molasses will depend on the demand for
sugar. A change in demand for molasses will not result in higher
sugarcane cultivation due to its lack of economic profitability.
