The Romans once occupied southern France and left remarkable monuments behind. Northeast of Nimes you find the Pont du Gard, a three-tiered aqueduct that had belonged to a larger system of channels dating back to the year 19 BC. At the aqueduct’s tallest point, it reaches a height of 161 feet, stretching a distance of 907 feet long. Today, you can walk across the tiers to witness the charming panorama overlooking the River Gard. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated with bright floodlights.
