I was Called Many Times But I Would Not Hear
This week I was reading in the scriptures for this class, and what stuck out most to me was Amulek’s statement about how he was “called my times (by the Lord), but could not hear.” Right as I read this, I felt so strongly that this was me, not that I have rejected what the Lord has to say to me, but that I have neglected it. It’s easier to not listen, to stay in our comfort zones, easier to just let things be how they were, to not let things change, to not repent for small little imperfections. But I have been called, and I still do not listen. On this road to perfection, sometimes I forget that the higher we get towards the Lord, the smaller our changes will be, the more refined our Spirit becomes the more closely we must scrutinize ourselves to see the things that we must change. Those little things that you jettison on the way to Eternal Life, those are the very things that matter most. Those are equal to the big things that you cast off earlier on in the road, those are the things that are required of you for progression, which qualifies them as the most important thing in your life to change, no matter how big or small they seem to be. Being called by the Lord puts you in a sacred place, and the greatest sin I think I commit on a daily basis is the sin of Omission, the sin of not seeking, the sin of not caring as much as I should. I love the example of Amulek, that as soon as he has a prophet of the Lord show him the way to worship God with his whole might, mind, and strength, he does it, no questions. This week I hope to improve on this, to let the Lord in to speak to me whenever he needs to, and not have the small voice of the Spirit be drowned out even by things that are inherently good, such as music or friends or school. All He asks is for me to hear Him when He speaks, and to do when He commands. I am grateful for the chance to start over each day anew by the power of the Atonement, to turn to him, or as it means in Thai, to “return our hearts” to the one who created us.
