The STOP Food Waste programme is funded under the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme (NWPP). Waste Prevention is the preferred waste management option in Ireland. By not generating waste, we can eliminate the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of waste. We can also avoid having to pay for these services.
In light of the significant issues arising from the disposal of food waste, and the realisation of the costs associated with this, the EPA set out to promote food waste prevention and home composting.
This Framework Programme is managed by The Clean Technology Centre and run in conjunction with:
Composting & Recycling Consultants Ireland
Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC)
Wastedown Consultants
Since 2009, when the programme started, we have worked with householders, communities, schools, local authorities, tidy towns groups and businesses providing comprehensive information about the food we waste and how to prevent this through RETHINKING how we shop, store our food, cook it and reuse it. However, there will always be some food waste so also have extensive information on all forms of composting.
Working in conjunction with other national programmes as well as with local community networks is a key principal of how Stop Food Waste works. We work closely with programmes such as the Local Authority Prevention Network (LAPN), the Green Hospitality Award (GHA) and Green Homes as well as directly with Green Festivals, Tidy Towns and Green Communities. Through these collaborations we can spread our message while supporting local initiatives – a win win for all!
