Two of the 17 (12%) probiotic strains (L. plantarum LPAL and
B. animalis ssp lactis BLC1) showed inhibitory activity against
C. perfringens in the agar well diffusion assay (Table 1). Both strains
showed inhibitory activity irrespective of whether the supernatant
pH was neutralized or not. The inhibition zone was greater when
supernatant without neutralization was added (Fig. 1). The inhibition
zones were present using supernatants collected at different
time points during probiotic culture (i.e., 12 h, 24 h, 36 h, 48 h, and
72 h and six days of incubation) (Fig. 1). Inhibition against C. difficile
was observed for 10 of the 17 (59%) probiotic strains tested
(Table 1); however, inhibition of this clostridial species was only
observed when the pH of the supernatant was not neutralized and
when the supernatant was collected after 36 h, 48 h, 72 h or 6 days
of incubation. For both species, MRS broth adjusted to pH 6.8 or 3.9
did not result in any inhibition zone and no differences were
observed between duplicate tests.
