The most widely validated instrument for delirium screening is the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM). The CAM was developed by Inouye et al. (1990) to detect delirium in hospitalized older adults. The CAM includes an instrument and diagnostic algorithm for identification of delirium. Originally developed through literature review and expert panel consensus, the CAM assesses the presence of four key delirium features: acute onset and fluctuation, inattention, disorganized thinking, and altered level of consciousness (Wei, Fearing, Sternberg, & Inouye, 2008).
