In Buddhist teaching, only intentional actions produce karma. Buddhist ethics (rules of proper behavior) emphasize that one should promote good karma and avoid bad karma.
To this end, early Buddhism developed five precepts for morally upright behavior:
(1) not to intentionally destroy life,
(2) not to steal,
(3) not to engage in sexual misconduct,
(4) not to lie, and
(5) not to become intoxicated.
