Building Conditions
NRC’s EE4 software4 was used to model
the energy use of a Halifax MURB, and
showed modest energy reductions from
orientation, window performance and
window size. The advantage of energy
reductions due to orientation is that they
are free, and the savings continue for the
life-time of the building. Note also that
these energy simulation results are specific
to a particular location. The MURB had
the following characteristics:
■ Four-storey, double-loaded corridor,
wood-frame.
■ Window-to-wall ratio: 19 per cent on
primary facades.
