FLORENCE: It was amazing variety. It really was. OK. So let's take a minute and debrief that meeting.
SCOTT: OK, sure.
FLORENCE: Do you mind if I give you some feedback?
SCOTT: It's about the risk thing, right? I know. I screwed up.
FLORENCE: About that comment on risk, you focused on the risk rather than on the mitigates. And unfortunately, that agitated the client. Did you notice that too?
SCOTT: I did. And I saw that you pulled it out of the fire. But at the same time, I think it's important that we're totally straight with our clients. And I know that Phil's risk averse, So my response made the most sense to me.
FLORENCE: Made the most sense to you. Can you say a little bit more about that?
SCOTT: Well, I didn't know how to position the issue given that Phil is so risk averse. So I froze. I didn't know how to convey both the mitigates and the risks without losing credibility.
FLORENCE: I can see that. So just a quick point. Anytime you talk about risk, you should also talk about mitigates. If you don't, well, you saw what happened.
SCOTT: Right. And I actually thought about a few mitigation strategies. But when he asked me, I just-- I couldn't find the words.
FLORENCE: So let's take a minute and think about what we can do the next and this comes up. Risk is a tough topic, especially with risk-averse clients.
SCOTT: OK.
FLORENCE: So here's what we can do. I can predict the types of questions that clients will ask. And we can take you through a trial run to get you ready. Make sense?
SCOTT: Sure. I'll come up with a list of a few objections that I want to be able to answer. And we can work on them.
FLORENCE: OK. Great. I can do the same. And believe me, I'll be a lot tougher on you in a trial run than any client will be in real life. Good. Enjoy your lunch.
