given of the various methods that may be used for
the assessment of dermal exposure with special
emphasis on the quantitative measures and recommendations
for sampling strategy. These
methods only determine the external exposure of
people who may be exposed under various conditions
of (protective) clothing and on various parts
of the skin. The problem of clothing penetration
and, more importantly, penetration of the skin
will be touched upon. The occurrence of possible
dermal exposure may be important for local effects
(e.g., dermal irritation and sensitization), as
well as for systemic effects. In this paper the
emphasis will be put on the importance of exposure
in relation with systemic effects, although
the methods for exposure assessment are for the
greater part the same.
