After the shark votes at CITES were successful, Abercrombie and Chapman had little time to rest. “Now we have until September 2014 to help prepare border control personnel in the shark importing and exporting nations.” says Chapman. “It’s daunting, but we have government invitations and have started doing workshops in countries ranging from Costa Rica and Fiji to the United Arab Emirates and also in Hong Kong. We have many more planned.” “Sometimes we meet with people at the more supervisory level, other times we work directly with field officers and customs agents,” says Abercrombie, a marine biologist with extensive experience working with sharks and shark fisheries. “These officials are from their city or country’s Departments of the Environment, Departments of Fisheries and the Customs Department.”
