tenfold molar excess of water, either in the liquid
phase in the presence of an acidic catalyst (e. g., 0.5 - 1 .O wtYo
H,SO,) at normal pressure and 5O-7O0C, or without a catalyst
at 140-230 "C and 20-40 bar. The ethylene glycol manufacture
takes place almost exclusively in a coupled reactor following
direct oxidation of ethylene. The resulting aqueous crude glycol
solution is concentrated to 70% by evaporation and fractionally
distilled in several vacuum columns. Despite the large excess of
water, monoethylene glycol selectivity is only about 90%.
