Generally, two specific glandular cells are exclusively present in the adhesive epithelia, which are mainly distinguishable by the size of their granula. One long slender cell type always contains small granules (0.05–1 m) of neutral sugars (not verified for Nautilus and Sepia). The second cell type synthesizes large, membrane-bound secretory granules (0.5–2 m in diameter) which likewise consist of neutral sugars (Cyran and von Byern, 2010; Klinger et al., 2010; von Byern et al., 2010b). In two cases (Idiosepius and Sepia), both cell types are associated with aggregations of different cell numbers (1:8 in Idiosepius, 1:2 in S. tuberculata).
