More recently, however, there has been a growing interest in the kind of work-integrated
learning represented by co-operative education, where students alternate study terms with work terms in jobs that permit them to apply what they are learning even as they learn it. The pedagogical benefits of this form of education are well recognized, and the practical benefits are undeniable. Students integrate and consolidate what they learn conceptually by attempting to employ it in an authentic work environment. In the process they also earn wages to offset the costs of their education to themselves and the state.
