An operational version of what is to be managed is the so-called ‘‘carbon footprint’’, known widely but superficially. The concept issub-category of the broader ‘‘ecological footprint’’ – a concept originally devised by Wackernagel and Rees (1996) to measure the human demand on the Earth’s ecosystems. A ‘‘carbon footprint’’ is, according to the UK Carbon Trust (2008), ‘‘the total setGHG emissions caused directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product. A carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment’’.
