Many Indians themselves often simply call the canonical Hindu religious traditions Sanatan Dharma, which means “eternal teaching.”
Sanatan Dharma refers to the Hinduism that elevates brahmins as the priestly caste, and the Sanskrit scriptures, especially the Vedas, as the main repositories of religious truth.
This term does not necessarily include local variants of Hinduism that follow their own customs. For example, vegetarianism is exalted in Sanatan Dharma, whereas many worshipers would sacrifice animals, which is disparaged on in brahmin-led Hinduism
