No textbook on sport in the UK would be complete without an examination or discussion of English league football, which is the focus of this chapter. From a social and economic viewpoint, English football has made substantive social and economic contributions to sport and wider society, not just in the UK but also worldwide. The origins of league football are very well documented (see Russell 1997) and what started out as a league of eight founder members has grown to become the world’s biggest organised sports league with 92 clubs organised into four divisions: the Premier League, the Championship, League 1 and League 2 as they are currently marketed and promoted.
