Until we are prepared to change our whole way of living-for example, to pay more for handcrafted instead of mass-produced products and so to consume less-we would do better to spend our time trying not to convert our machine bureaucracies into something else but to ensure that they work effectively as the bureaucracies they are meant to be: Organizations, like individuals, can avoid identity crises by deciding what deciding what it is they wish to be and then pursuing it with a healthy obsession.
