The term probiotic is derived from ancient Greek and Latin and
means ‘for life’ (Sanders, 2008). The definition of probiotics provided
by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations
and theWorld Health Organization (WHO) in 2001 has been reworded
by the expert panel of the International Scientific Association for
Probiotics and Prebiotics which define probiotics as ‘live microorganisms
that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health
benefit on the host’ (
