In one study of hospital discharge data over a 4-year period of children with a diagnosis of asthma, the authors examined environmental factors and their impact on hospital readmissions. Results yielded that children with Medicaid insurance are at significantly higher risk for hospital readmission for asthma than children with private health insurance (Liu & Pearlman, 2009). In conclusion, research has shown that prior emergency department visits, Medicaid insurance, age, and time of year are significant predictors in repeat visits to the emergency department.
