Safeguarding relationships
Although grandparents viewed the considerable time they spent with their well grandchild(ren) positively, they were aware of siblings’ need to remain in contact with their parents and their sibling with HLHS. Safeguarding relationships in the family involved grandparents’ sensitivity to the complex and sometimes competing needs of the sick child, the parents as individuals and as a couple, and the well siblings. Despite the obvious and understandably consuming needs of the child with HLHS, grandparents played a key role in advocating for well sibling(s):
