2. Materials and methods
2.1. Media selection
The media selection was based on commercially available
formulations that contained either vegetable-based protein
extracts from soybean (i.e. phytone) (Media A) or pea flour
(Media B). Both media have equivalent composition with the
exception of the protein source and the addition of yeast extract
in Media B. Traditional tryptic soy medium was purchased from Becton Dickinson (Sparks, MD). Broth medium was used as
directed by the manufacturer and supplemented with BD/Difco
brand agar (15.0 g/L).
