Plankton (singular plankter) is a diverse group
of organisms that live in the water column and
have limited ability to swim against a current.
This definition encompasses many species
from bacterial phytoplankton and fish larvae to
mollusks and crustaceans. In this paragraph,
size classes as defined by Omori. (Omori &
Ikeda, 1985) will be used (Table 6.3).
There are three factors related to zooplankton
that need to be taken into consideration when
estimating the amount of bycatch by the Ocean
Cleanup Array: species diversity, their biomass,
and the vertical distribution of the zooplankton.
