CONCLUSIONS
It is too early to tell how widely ISO 50001 will be adopted. At present, the drivers for
third-party certification to an internationally recognized energy management standard are
mixed. Some countries are using the energy management standard as a path to industry
compliance with mandatory policies or regulations, while others have successfully
provided incentives to encourage voluntary adoption. Countries that provide financial
incentives have been successful in increasing the rate of certification of sites within their
boundaries. In a few cases, successful experiences implementing ISO 50001 in one
facility have led to broader corporate adoption of the standard. Irrespective of whether
certification becomes a business or government requirement, the ISO 50001 family of
standards will serve as a valuable blueprint for the energy manager seeking to put in place
best practices in site or corporate energy management.
