Kelch and Santana-Williamson (2002) led an a great deal more focused research study. They intended to figure out whether ESL students could identify a native from a non-native accent and if they held more positive attitude towards teachers with “native” accents. The results demonstrate that students had the capacity effectively distinguish native and nonnative speakers of English just 45% of the time, and that their view of the teachers’nativeness firmly impacted the attitudes they held towards these teachers.
