Chapter V: Discussion
Previous research suggests that a better understanding of the correlates of PA behaviors in children will support the development of effective interventions that promote a physically active lifestyle (Van Der Horst et al., 2007). However, few studies have examined the psychosocial correlates of PA in preadolescents (Cardon et al., 2005).The aim of this study was to examine the associations between the psychosocial correlates of PA, Gender, Extracurricular PA Participation, Intention to Be Physically Active, and BMI among third grade children. The purpose of this section is to discuss the results of the current study as they relate to the existing literature. Furthermore, in order to develop effective interventions to assist young people to maintain or increase activity levels, the literature on correlates of PA should be applied to intervention design (Sallis et al., 1999). Therefore, intervention suggestions will also be discussed in this section.
