Wacky Sporting Events
Sporting events are thrilling for participants and spectators alike. Nothing beats the excitement of competing or the fun of cheering on your team or athlete. But when the sporting event is unusual and quirky, the experience can be extremely amusing as well.
One such quirky sporting event is the Cheese Rolling event held each May in the English countryside. This 200-year-old event begins when a 6.5 pound (3-kilogram) piece of cheese is rolled down an extremely steep hill. Thousands watch as up to 20 competitors run and tumble down the hill in an effort to catch the cheese. However, outrunning the cheese, which reaches speeds of up to 70 miles (113 kilogram) an hour, isn’t really possible. So the winner is the person who reaches the bottom of the hill first.
Running down a hill after a hunk of cheese may sound and look funny, but it is also quite dangerous. Because the hill is so steep and uneven, there are always broken bones, concussions, and sprained ankles. Such injuries are so common, in fact, that an ambulance waits at the bottom of the hill to collect the participants with the inevitable injuries. Considering the risk involved in this event, you might assume that the winner gets a spectacular prize. But the first person to reach the bottom of the hill receives no money, no car, not even a trophy. The winner simply gets to take home the cheese!
Perhaps you prefer sporting event that involve teamwork. If so, you might consider attending the American Wife Carrying Championships in Maine. In this event, each participant navigates a difficult obstacle course that includes an 18-foot (6-meter) long pit filled with 3 feet (1 meter) of water, a downhill run grass, and two log hurdles. The catch? He must do all of this while carrying a women (though not necessarily his wife) on his back. Dropping the “wife” at any point during the race results in receiving penalty points. This unusual sporting event originated as a joke in Scandinavia and is supposedly based on a past practice in which men found women to marry by running to their village, picking them up, and carrying them off.
But perhaps cheese rolling and wife carrying sound like too much effect. Perhaps you would prefer to compete in a sporting event in which you could remain in a sitting position throughout. If so, you might enjoy the Sauna World Championship, held each August in Finland. In this event, men and women from all over the world compete to be the person who sits the longest in an incredibly hot sauna.
The competition begins with the sauna heated to a temperature of 230c Fahrenheit (110 Celsius)! Then every 30 seconds, half a liter of water is thrown on to the sauna stove, which actually increases the heat. The last person to leave the sauna is the World Sauna Champion. Many contestants experience first degree burns from the intense heat. After this experience, some contestants may no longer even be interested in winning the competition a sauna heater!
Spectators who watch participants run after cheese, carry wives, or sweat in sauna are clearly looking for a unique sporting experience. They want not only to witness a test of strength and determination, but have a good laugh as well!
