Headache is the second most common reason for a visit to a doctor. There are approximately 45 million Americans complaining of headaches each year. That works out to about one in every six people or 16.54% of the population. One of the most debilitating forms of headache is known as Migraines. Typically, these are severe headaches, characterized by throbbing of one side of the head, nausea and vomiting, sleep disturbances and in some cases, visual disturbances (and I can attest to every one of these symptoms).
Treating symptoms and creating side effects
Typical Migraine Treatment
The traditional forms of treatment for migraines are antidepressants, Blood pressure medications such as beta blockers or calcium channel blockers and anti-seizure medications. Personally, I think the side effects from those treatments create worse problems than the migraine themselves. Also, these medications are merely an attempt to mask a symptom, and does nothing to address the cause of the problem.
Let’s take a look at some other forms of alternative treatment. And. of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention chiropractic first.
As a Chiropractor, my primary objective is to address the cause of the problem.
Migraine sufferers have gained favorable results from Chiropractic care. (something I wish I knew when I suffered my migraine)The Chiropractic philosophy is based on the alignment of the spine. There are seven vertebrae in your neck which is composes the cervical spine. When a vertebra in your cervical spine misaligns, this creates pressure on a nerve. This pressure and misalignment is known as a “subluxation”. In this case, the subluxation can be the cause of the migraine headache. By removing the subluxation, the cause of the migraine is removed.
