Optimizing animal feed: host-derived antimicrobial peptides as alternatives to antibiotics.
Schothorst Feed Research is known around the world as a leader in the field of testing and improving animal feed. Founded in 1935 by Dutch farmers to improve the effectiveness of animal feed, Schothorst has since grown into a R&D SME with thriving international business, primarily in Europe, the Middle-East and Asia.
Schothorst combines knowledge of raw materials, animal nutritional requirements and physiology with genetics and animal health- and welfare aspects. In up to date facilities, the company tests the effectiveness of feed using challenge tests and testing at the farm level. One new product recently added to the product line is E-layers®, the first feed valuation programme for the optimal feeding of layers.
Since the addition of antibiotics to animal feed is prohibited, the research & development of alternatives to antibiotics has become an important focus area for Schothorst Feed Research. ‘We joined Immuno Valley to participate in the Alternatives to Antibiotics Program (ALTANT)’, explains Marcel Hakkaart, Managing Director. ‘In the context of this program, we have successfully performed proof-of principle animal experiments using antimicrobial peptides from Utrecht University. As a result, Zoetis has become involved in the follow-up research and possible commercialisation.’
Hakkaart values the partnership within Immuno Valley: ‘No organisation can cover every aspect of the complex area we work in. Therefore, I strongly support multidisciplinary partnership.’
