Historically, HRM practitioners have been concerned with managing human resources to achieve organizational goals The current HRM theories such as the resource-based view support the idea that employees are a unique, inimitable, and immobile resource providing firms with a competitive advantage. HRM practitioners have embraced strategically aligning HRM practices with organizational goals. Though these advances are important for demonstrating the necessity of an effective HRM department for organizational success, this perspective must go farther in the future to avoid the risk of satisfying organizational outcomes at the expense of employees.
