This article examines the optimum process and frequency
of one of these tests, blood glucose monitoring,
and produces a working guideline for nursing staff on
the wards: the more frequent the test, the greater the
risk. It examines the physiology of the pancreas, the
pathology of acute pancreatitis and its impact on
blood glucose control. It discusses chronic pancreatitis,
treatment options and the nursing therapy required by
a patient suffering an acute episode.
