The paper reviews the 20% downsizing of a current SI GDI V8 turbocharged engine, obtained by reducing bore and
adopting a triple turbocharger lay-out. The study is performed with GT-Power, while the CFD-3D analyses are
presented in a parallel paper [2].
The main advantages found for the triple turbocharger, in comparison to the standard twin configuration, are: higher
boost pressure at low engine speed; lower pumping losses at high speed, full load, better transient response.
The main drawbacks are: higher complexity of the control system; larger overall dimensions; cost.
