The development of anoxia in water leads to the buildup of chemically reduced compounds such as ammonium and hydrogen sulfide which can be toxic to bottom dwelling organisms. This suggests that DO is one of the most important water quality parameters and the state of algal growth can be inferred from an observed DO profile. The DO concentration is measured by a DO meter. Both bacterial inactivation and algae removal were enhanced with increasing external voltage, indicating that a stronger electric field results in more efficient disinfection and algae removal. All three bacteria achieved over 6 log(99.9999%) removal at 6 corresponding to no cultivatable bacteria detected in the solution, with retention time of 30 s.
