Panikkar 1968. reported that less osmotic energy is expended by shrimps near the
isosmotic point, and so they have energy to spare for growth. The isosmotic points for
penaeids range from 23 to 33 ppt. The present study indicated that the isosmotic point of
P. chinensis juveniles was 25.0 ppt at 308C, or 2.4, 1.1 and 0.3 ppt lower than those at
12, 18 and 248C. If the above hypothesis is true, these data suggest that the salinity at
which there is least energy expenditure for P. chinensis decreases as temperature
increases.
