When choosing a computer, it is important to consider how you are going to use it to determine what capabilities you need. Knowing what you need can save you money because, many times, computers have features well beyond what most users need. Costs for a notebook computer are significantly higher than a desktop that has comparable features.
Portability and Size
The biggest advantage notebooks have over desktops is their portability and small size. This allows them to be brought and used on trips and in classes or meetings. Notebook computers also have the ability to run on battery power when a power outlet is unavailable. Desktop computers cannot be easily moved and must have an external power source in order to run.
Hard Drive Capacity
Desktop computers have significant advantage over notebooks in hard drive capacity because of their larger size. However, depending on what you use your computer for, you may not need the extra capacity. Many notebooks have at least 250GB of space which can hold about 50,000 pictures, over 60,000 MP3 files, or 30 hours of HD video. If you are concerned that a notebook will not have enough hard drive space, but do not want a desktop, you can consider getting an external drive to store files to which you do not need immediate access to free up space on your notebook.
Processors
Notebook computers are limited in the amount of power they can use and heat that can be generated. Cooling systems in notebooks are limited because of space considerations. Desktop computers do not have this limitation because they can have a large cooling system built in. If you only use the computer for typing documents and surfing the Internet, you most likely will not need the added power that desktops offer. However, if you are working with video editing or intense gaming, you may needed that added processing speed.
Upgrades
According to PC Guide, notebook computers are more difficult to upgrade than desktop computers. It is easier to add RAM, replace the old hard drive or change processors in a desktop than a laptop. If you plan to keep you computer long enough that you will want or need to upgrade it rather than replace it, you should consider a desktop.
Graphics
Because notebook computers need to minimize power usage, the graphics cards are limited. Notebooks usually have integrated graphics cards, while desktops can have more powerful discrete graphics cards. If you use your computer for gaming or modeling three dimensional objects, you may need the added graphics capabilities of a desktop.
