In 1969 , King’s Road was a very fashionable street in London.
Many famous people lived there.
For a year, a lion named Christian did, too.
He rode around in a Mercedes Benz.
He want to expensive restaurants.
His picture appeared in a fashion advertisement.
Christian’s owners, Ace Bourke and John Rendall, bought him at Harrods department store.
The little lion was all alone in the exotic animal department, and they felt sorry for him.
Of course, today you cannot buy a wild animal in a department store.
But London was a pretty wild place in the 1960s!
Bourke and Rendall were working in a shop on King’s Road at the time.
They convinced the shop’s owner that the little cub would be good for business.
Christian moved into the shop’s basement.
On Sundays, Christian slept in the shop window.
For exercise, Rendall and Bourke played soccer with Christian and took him swimming in the English Channel.
They loved the little cub, bur Christian was growing fast.
He could not stay with them forever.
Then Bourke and Rendall heard about a wildlife conservationist in Kenya.
His mane was George Adamson, and he knew a lot about lions.
Bourke and Rendall asked for his help.
Adamson agreed to try to introduce Christian to the wild, and Bourke and Rendall took Christian to Kenya.
It was hard to say good bye, but they knew it was the best thing for Christian.
In 1972, the two men went back for a visit.
Adamson did not think that Christian would recognize them, but he was wrong.
Rendall and Bourke filmed to emotional moment when Christian saw them.
Rendall says, “we called him and he… started to walk toward us very slowly.
Then … he ran toward us, … hugged us … threw himself onto us with his paws on our shoulders.
Everyone was crying.”
Rendall saw Christian for the last tine in 1974. Christian was a wild lion by then, with his own fanily. But he still remembered his od friend.
After that last visit, no one ever saw Chtistian again, but Bourke and Rendall are convinced that he lived a long, happy life in the wild.
