It is found that household increased debts because of high cost of inputs: high cost of fertilizer, high cost of sugarcane stalk, high cost of labor, making fence (to protect their sugarcane from cows). Planting sugarcane in this area has high input costs, almost all inputs are provided by the factory, however, the households have to pay back at a 6 percent interest rate, although some households may receive a different rate. Savannakhet Province reported that planting sugarcane in Xaiburi incurred high input costs with the total input cost at $2,143 hectare (1 hectare = 6.25 rai) per year (Savannakhet, 2013).
