There has to be a unified (if not precisely uniform) culture. And there has to be
room for the appropriate expression of individual convictions. These two are not
necessarily in opposition, but they can be. Among a few very important things,
school is about helping young people to gain the habit of seeing the virtue of such
a balance, not only at school but in all the years that follow. One is true to
oneself. One is also true to one’s communities. Each citizen must find his or her
most defensible balance. School exists to help along that process (pp.17-18).
