Za'ba's writings can be gathered from many magazines or journals such as Majalah Guru [Teachere'Magazine], Seremban, and then Kuala Lumpur (1924-1931), JMBRAS Singapore (1924-1940), Majalah Malayu [Malayu Magazine], penang (1926) and al-Ikhwan [The Broterhood], Penang (1926-1930). Due to his illness in September 1929, he was given leave to visit Indonesia for three months in 1931. During this visit, he met Haji Karim Amrullah who was Hamka's father and Hasan Bandung both of whom were Muslim reformers in Indonesia. His visit to Balai Pustaka allowed him to compare his Office in Malaya and the Balai Pustaka. He gained a lot of ideas and when he wrote his report to Winstedt for the improvement of his Office, he received
